Trade secrets and other confidential or proprietary information can be some of the most valuable assets that a company owns. Unsurprisingly, many companies are willing to go to great lengths (such measures occasionally becoming fodder for urban myths) to protect them.
Fortunately, Texas law and Federal law provide companies with opportunities to protect these assets, if they take proper precautions, use the correct agreements, and follow certain procedures – of course, in consultation with legal counsel. While the protection afforded might not be perfect under all circumstances, it can still be quite strong.
In addition, unlike certain other types of intellectual property (such as copyrights or patents), there is no time limit on the protection conferred by the information’s status as a trade secret.
