Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) is a life-saving technique that can make a significant difference in an emergency situation. Knowing how to perform CPR on an adult can mean the difference between life and death. Here’s a step-by-step guide to help you understand the basics of performing CPR:

  1. Check for Responsiveness: Before starting CPR, ensure the person is unresponsive. Gently tap their shoulder and shout to check for a response. If there’s no response, proceed to the next step.
  2. Call for Help: Dial emergency services or ask someone nearby to call for help. CPR should ideally be performed by trained professionals.
  3. Open the Airway: Tilt the person’s head back slightly to open the airway. Lift the chin to help clear any obstructions.
  4. Check for Breathing: Place your ear near the person’s mouth and nose, looking for chest movement and listening for breath sounds. If there’s no breathing, proceed to the next step.
  5. Start Chest Compressions: Place the heel of your hand on the center of the person’s chest, just below the nipple line. Position your other hand on top and interlock your fingers. Use your body weight to perform compressions, pushing hard and fast – at least 2 inches deep and at a rate of around 100-120 compressions per minute.
  6. Perform Rescue Breaths: After 30 compressions, give 2 rescue breaths. Pinch the person’s nose, cover their mouth with yours, and give breaths until the chest rises visibly.
  7. Continue Compressions and Breaths: Continue the cycle of 30 compressions followed by 2 breaths until help arrives or the person shows signs of responsiveness.

Remember, CPR should be administered with caution and as accurately as possible. If you’re not trained, perform hands-only CPR (compressions only) to the beat of “Stayin’ Alive” by the Bee Gees, which helps maintain the right compression rate. Enrolling in a certified CPR course equips you with the skills to respond effectively in critical situations, increasing the chances of saving a life.
