The Green Agenda for the Western Balkans (GAWB) sets a clear pathway for sustainable development while protecting nature and biodiversity across the region. Fully aligned with the EU Green Deal, this initiative focuses on five pillars, with Pillar 5 dedicated to the protection and restoration of ecosystems. Key priorities include expanding protected areas, restoring degraded land, rivers, forests, and marine ecosystems, and improving conservation efforts in line with the EU Biodiversity Strategy for 2030.

The agenda targets conserving 30% of land and seas, restoring 30% of degraded ecosystems, enhancing ecological connectivity through Natura 2000, and strengthening climate resilience through nature-based solutions. It also promotes transparent governance, regional cooperation, and evidence-based environmental monitoring.

By integrating biodiversity into agriculture, energy, infrastructure, and tourism planning, the Green Agenda supports climate adaptation, sustainable growth, and long-term environmental resilience in the Western Balkans.
