How to Safely Secure Your Pet in the Car

1. Use a Harness and Seat Belt:
For medium to large dogs, a chest-style harness secured in the rear seat is a safe and effective option. Thread the seat belt through the loop on the back of the harness or underneath it, following the instructions in the harness manual for proper installation. This method helps keep your pet seated and secure during travel.

2. Try a Pet Tether (Pet Seat Belt):
A pet restraint tether—commonly called a pet seat belt—is an affordable and simple way to secure your dog. It clips onto the pet’s harness and connects to the vehicle by latching into a seatbelt buckle or a child-seat anchor point, reducing your pet’s ability to move around the cabin.

3. Use a Crate or Carrier:
Smaller pets can ride in a portable carrier, which should be secured in the second row using seat belts or cushioning to prevent shifting. Carriers can also be placed on the floor behind a front seat. Medium to large pets are better transported in a sturdy kennel secured in the cargo area of an SUV or truck. Always fasten the crate or kennel tightly to minimize movement.

4. Install a Cargo Divider:
For larger dogs riding in the back of an SUV, a cargo divider can help keep them safely in the rear area and out of the passenger cabin. While this helps establish boundaries, it’s still advisable to secure the dog within the cargo space using a harness or crate for added safety.
