Did you know that “GPS” is not an umbrella term for satellite navigation? GPS is just one system that is owned and operated by the United States. Other countries have their own satellite navigation systems. This infographic covers what a satellite navigation system is, why there are different systems and what those systems are.
According to the infographic, GPS system is composed of 24 satellites and was created by the U.S. Department of Defense. It can be accessed anywhere on or near the Earth where there is an unobstructed line-of-sight to four or more GPS satellite.
As for GLONASS, it is also composed of 24 satellites but was developed in the Soviet Union and is operated by the Russian Aerospace Defense Forces. The other two – Galileo and Compass are still in development.
